In a scene reminiscent of America’s Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima, the Afghan National Army (ANA) unfurls their Flag over Musa Qaleh. Despite the inherent possibilities of booby traps, land mines, and ambushes by insurgents the ANA cleared the city of Musa Qala of all hostile forces. Once the district center was retaken by the Citizens of Musa Qala, they immediately flew the Afghanistan Flag from the highest point of the district center building. The picture above of an Afghan Soldier proudly erecting his countries flag on top of the district center should be inspiring to any person who has lived life in a free society. From the stories of William Wallace’s army fighting for the freedom of Scotland to our own American Revolution, this story also represents a peoples’ lifetime of struggles to gain freedom from oppression. It is a story worth remembering, a story worth telling to our children, and a story that should be echoed throughout Afghanistan at every Shura, at every District Center in hopes of inspiring all Afghan people to go that extra step to defeat the insurgency and to ensure freedom for generations to come.
