BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan (June 23, 2008) – Afghan National Security Forces and Coalition forces killed several militants in the Sangain District, Helmand province Sunday.
ANSF spotted a three-man mortar team near a village while on a security patrol. The mortar team attacked the patrol with small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades.
Shortly after the firefight, the militants fled to a residential compound and used it as a fighting position. ANSF and Coalition forces waited until all women and children had left the compound before counter-attacking. They maintained positive identification of the militants until Coalition aircraft could arrive and provide supporting fire, killing the militants.
Two fortified enemy positions were also destroyed.
No ANSF, Coalition forces or civilian casualties have been reported.
